Description

"Soaring Hawks" Man's Under Kimono

Hawks - especially peregrine falcons - were very popular among samurai for sport hunting in the Edo Period. They became an auspicious masculine motif, so we often find them on boy's as well as men's kimono. This under kimono features dozens of golden brown hawks returning from the hunt, and behind are clouds and cresting waves with black in between.

Under kimono (called juban or nagajuban) are layered under a kimono (and over undergarments) when dressing formally in a kimono. Although juban are often the more colorful and decorative versions of kimono for a man, only an inch of the collar would be visible to the public. The designs on the fabric are reserved for the wearer and whoever is in the room when he's getting dressed or undressed. This style of kimono is popular in Western countries as a casual robe or cover up.

See the video below on how to traditionally dress in man's kimono.
