Hakama are unisex pleated "pants" (which can actually be a skirt style). They are traditionally worn over a full kimono since the side slits reveal what's worn underneath. The waist is generally a free size since the front and back panels are joined by long ties that can be doubled around the waist on smaller frames. Men traditionally wear the hakama low on the hips, under their "sake belly"; Japanese women wear theirs high at the waist. Unless stated otherwise in the listing, vintage hakama were made to be worn for formal and semi-formal events and are not durable enough for martial arts practice. (We do offer custom hakama that could be made from cotton and reinforced for martial arts; see the listing below.)
