This is a vintage kimono jacket, called a haori, made for a man. The lining of men's haori jackets often depict a scene or motif that was of special interest to the original owner.

The lining of this man's kimono jacket features a dozen sailing vessels - three in the foreground with their huge wind-filled sails - skimming along a deep blue roiling sea.  Look very closely and - yes - you can see two tiny figures in the closest ship.

The outer silk is dark brown with a single "wood sorrel" family crest embroidered at the back of the neck - indicating it was intended for a semi-formal event where representing the family was imporant.

There is a worn area at the right side of the hip on the lining of the haori but it is otherwise in very good condition.

We display these haori inside out to feature the lining when it is unique. All of the stitching is hidden, so these jackets can normally be displayed or worn (in the West, at least) either way.
