This listing is a vintage Japanese folding fan (sensu in Japanese). See videos below on how the paper version of these fans are made - it's quite an elaborate and precise process.

The design of this fan looks mid-century modern to us!  Pastel little squares seem to tumble across a silver field with a patina that says "vintage!".  Some of the elements have additional shapes painted in silver.

The back side is plain silver, and the artisan's (or perhaps the original owner's) name is written on an end spine.
