Description

"Shiromuku" Wedding Kimono (Uchikake)

This is a vintage Japanese shiromuku wedding kimono, used for Shinto marriage ceremonies. It is the uchikake style, with a heavily padded hem, but white uchikake are called shiromuku.

Cranes and peonies - traditional wedding images - are woven into the tone-on-tone silk.

Small blemishes on the back of one sleeve - see photo.

There are several types of Japanese wedding kimono (uchikake, kakeshita, shiromuku), but the uchikake is the heaviest and most colorful. It is meant to be worn on top of the kakeshita wedding kimono, and is not meant to be tied with an obi. Rather, it is draped over the shoulders and worn mostly for picture taking. These make amazing displays.
