"From the Road" - Japanique Scarf

Perfect for someone who loves to travel - especially an adventure in Japan!

Our Japanique Boutique Scarves are created using salvaged fabrics from vintage Japanese kimono. Each is one of a kind, crafted to showcase the designs of the Japanese aesthetic. Because it’s two-sided, you’ll get different effects depending on how you wrap or drape it.

Side one features a collage of "postcards", each depicting a street or travel scene from the Edo or Meiji Period in Japan. Soft earth tone colors on these woodblock style scenes. Soft cotton blend.

Side two is oshima silk - a tiny ikat grid pattern woven in cream against the dark brown background. This silk was created with a traditional mud-dye technique called oshima or dorozome. Oshima refers to the iron-rich mud used to dye the threads brown and is said to strengthen the fibers so the fabric will last a long time. This technique, unfortunately, is now done only on a few islands in the southern part of Japan. See videos below on ikat and dorozome mud dye.

Made entirely with vintage kimono fabrics.
