"Daruma Ninja" Man's Haori

A vintage formal man's kimono jacket (called a haori). The decorative lining on these formal jackets often reflects the hobbies, interests, or favorite myths of the original owner.

This lining features tea ceremony items including tea bowls and several furoshiki-wrapped tea caddies.
Note the hand-painted images - figures and florals - in gray in the border areas. Elaborately designed fabric elements with gold accents.

There's an unusual element on the left side. At first we thought it was Daruma (god of endurance), but he seems to be on his back and he is usually depicted as a rounded, egg-shaped deity that wobbles but always rights himself when knocked over. This figure could also be the head of a ninja warrior with his hooded head covering. Note that the facial expression looks different depending on which direction you're looking from!

The outer jacket fabric is a solid light blue raw silk.

We display these men's haori inside out to reveal the lining - normally hidden from public view when worn, and only visible if glimpsed as it was taken off or hung up.

All of the stitching is hidden, so these jackets can normally be displayed or worn (in the West, at least) either way. See the video below on how to wear traditional Japanese garments for men.
