HOW DO I TIE AN OBI BOW? The style of obi bow is as significant as the choice of the obi itself, with each variation suggesting something about the age, status, and personality of the wearer, as well as the formality of the occasion. There are two types bows that you might recognize: A simple knot - often called a butterfly bow - is commonly worn at summer festivals with yukata or with a casual kimono. A taiko (drum) bow - often indicates a semi-formal event and is worn by married women. Aside from these, there are hundreds of variations with delightful names: sparrow, morning glory, iris, rose, clamshell, and so on.
