HOW SHOULD I STORE MY KIMONO?

We don't recommend storing your kimono on a hanger for more than a week or so. Over time the shape of the hanger will create a fold at the shoulders, and the weight of the garment will stress and weaken the fabric at the shoulder.

The best way to care for and store your Kimono is to fold it properly (see our “How Do I Fold My Kimono” question) and store it in a dark, dry location.  Traditionally, paulownia wood was used to store kimono in boxes or in special tansu (bureaus), but these days you can use any type of bureau drawer (or even plastic bins!) as long as  you include a desiccant to absorb moisture.  (Mothballs are not recommended - you can find an odorless silicon desiccant at some hardware stores or on line.)  If you can find tatoshi (the traditional paper wrappers for kimono and obi), do use them!
