"Nene" comes from
the Japanese word nemu (to sleep)
and means "sleepytime"
or "beddie-bye".
Each Nene Blankets is individually
designed and pieced together from vintage (1930-1980) Japanese
kimonos that we purchase at the temple markets and auction houses
in Kyoto, Japan. The colors, texture, and design of our Nene
Blankets attempt to capture the Japanese aesthetic for simple
and understated beauty. We choose unconventional color and pattern
combinations that may, at first, challenge the Western eye. Some
designs may take several glances to understand and enjoy. Be
patient, accept, and appreciate it for years to come.
The fabrics and 100% cotton batting
are pre-washed and hand-pieced. Dimensions will vary slightly,
based on the width of the panels chosen for the design. We use
mostly silks, but some blankets will include synthetics as stated.
As with all vintage fabrics,
our kimonos might have developed slight discolorations or blemishes
from age. The Japanese call this "wabi-sabi" -- the
beauty of imperfection in everyday objects that comes from respectful
use:
a favorite chipped tea bowl;
an ikebana basket used as a wrens' nest,
a teardrop stain on a young woman's kimono

This blanket
becomes a display piece once baby outgrows it. Delicate fan
patterns include some silvery embroidery, all on a strong
teal blue jacquard of
fans in the background. The accent color is a muted rusty-mauve
that appears both in the fans and in the verigated crepe silk
that borders the fan panels. Shibori fans on both
sides of the blanket.

design on the front. |

If you hoisted yourself
up on avaocado counters, got your Gerber's from a harvest gold
fridge, or learned to walk on vermillion shag carpeting, this
blanket is for you, not your baby! Amazingly fun
color match between this funky brushstroke pattern and the
stained-glass type floral
that goes so well with it. Bands
of fabric on each side keep the design quiet enough so you
can hear the 5th Dimension. |
