|
ITEM NUMBER: 0408BK2 |

This is a kimono is called a miyamairi,
traditionally given to a newborn boy for photos and then worn
at the 7-5-3 Festival. Masculine images, often a hawk, are usually featured on
the back. This one shows two
hawks, both with silver embroidered embellishment. Beautifully
colored blue waves add more value and charm, as does the
light blue sky. Five crests make this a very formal kimono as
do the other lucky
symbols (mallet, bamboo, etc.) |

"Ikat for the
Lad " Boy's Kimono - $55 |
|
ITEM NUMBER: 0408BK4 |
|
An
unusual kimono to find these days - a boy's kimono that is
not ceremonial, and likley from the countryside and purchased
for everyday use. The ikat
pattern of horizonal
bands has a rustic feel and even the fabric - cotton and
wool blend - suggests this kimono was worn by a boy at work at
the home farm or shop. Fine to wear (good condition) but an even better addition
to a collection of rural textiles. |

"Taisho Purple"
Girl's Kimono - $150 |
|
ITEM NUMBER: 0408GK3 |
|
Fantastic young
girls' kimono probably from the Taisho Period of the 1920's,
though there is no way to be sure. It's our guess based on the
color and design, as well as the silk
crepe and artistry of the yuzen process. In great shape for
its age but much more appropriate for display Bright colors,
festive florals,
and a soft touch to the silk. Note the tacked tucks at the shoulders
and the waist that can be let out for more length at hem and
sleeves. |

"Ikat Tic Tac
Toe " Boy's Kimono - $65 |
|
ITEM NUMBER: 0408BK5 |
|
Countryside textiles are not
easy to come by these days - and this is a fine example of one.
Blended cotton and wool and
cotton lining suggest this piece was made
for a young boy in rural Japan, or at least in a household
where money was tight. Wonderful
X and O ikat pattern
in brown and white against black. Sweet
curved sleeves and a bit of padding for warmth. Like new
condition. Wearable for a toddler but better as part of your
textile collection. |

"Olive with
Cranes " Boy's Kimono - $75 |
|
ITEM NUMBER: 0408BK6 |
|
Wonderful olive
green color - a departure from the more commonly found blue
or black - is just the first of several unusual features of this
young boy's kimono. The
purple accent at the feet of the cranes is also rare, and
the family crests -
pine boughs - is a first for us as well. A soft silk, slightly
padded, and
in great condition for its age (perhaps the 1940's?) make this
a wonderful display
piece. |

Noshi and Hawk Boy's
Kimono- $200 |
|
ITEM NUMBER: 1007BK1 |
|
Wonderfully festive design
of a pair of hawks
fluttering among a bundle of ribbons
(called noshi)
that arch across the back of this boy's ceremonial kimono. The
background is a deep
blue, not the more common black with a wide cream bank around
the middle section. Muted
colors on the ribbons, each with its own design. A wonderful
display piece,
but there is some slight fading
at the seams (from years of storage) and a fewblemishes
on the underkimono
which comes with it. These kimonos are draped
and tied over a newborn when they go to the temple for their
first blessing (and photo op) and later for the San-Go-Shi (3-5-7)
holiday. |

Girl's Yukata Kimono - $50 |
|
ITEM NUMBER: 0807GK1 |
|
Young girl's summer cotton kimono in a festive
mix of colors with a block and floral stencil-style pattern (but
it's printed,
not stenciled). It's long
for a girls' kimono (the excess can be taken up at the waist)
but note the narrow
sleeves and small wrist opening - this is for a small
girl. |

Fu Dog Delightful! Boy's Kimono- $250 |
|
ITEM NUMBER: 1102BK2 |
|
Amazing traditional boy's ceremonial
kimono with underkimono
included. The design on the back features a large painted
fu dog (guardian to the gods) bounding through the pines.
Don't miss the many gold highlights and the five family crests
and the original paper-folded tassle
in the back, which suggests that this kimono was probably never
worn by its owner, perhaps a five year old boy. These kimonos
are draped over a newborn when they go to the temple for their
first blessing (and photo op) and later for the San-Go-Shi (3-5-7)
holiday. |

"Toy Box "
Boy's Kimono - $65 |
|
ITEM NUMBER: 0907BK2 |
|
Probably from the 1940s or 50's,
this is a toddler's kimono intended to be worn in the house as
a robe. Eight different fun and playful images march along each
of te bands of patterning: houses
and boats, bunnies
and fish, horns
and flowers, birds
and trains - so cute! Sure, it's wearable but may be better
for display. |
