Description

"Taisho Ikat" Japanique Robe

A red silk kimono with a pink ikat design of crosses. A few interesting details on this robe make it stand out from the rest.

The red lining and the quality of the silk suggests this is from the Taisho Period (1920s). There are many boro repairs on the back (see photos) that also suggests this is an older kimono and was well loved. On the front sleeve bottom is a stamp of the manufacturer - this appears at the very end of the silk bolt and is rarely, if ever, used in the garment.

Ikat (also called kasuri) is a centuries-old method of weaving where the threads are dyed before being woven, so that the design appears on the loom. Ikat is a very labor-intensive textile art form, still very much revered in Japan and around the world. See the amazing process in the video below.

We have modified a woman's vintage kimono slightly to create this Japanique Boutique Robe. Shortening the length to 45" makes it easier to wear as a robe or cover up. These also look great worn open as a kimono style long jacket.

We made a matching belt from the remnant, but the belt is narrow (3-4") and the length is 78" -- not a wide obi-like sash you'd normally see with a kimono.
