Description

"Shine On" Japanique Jacket

A crisp silk that shimmers and shines - we don't see this type of silk as often as you might think.

It's a lovely light blue with a subtle floral ikat design created with tiny dashes in red, green, blue, and brown.

Ikat (also called kasuri) is a centuries-old method of weaving where the threads are dyed before being woven, so that the design appears on the loom. Ikat is a very labor-intensive textile art form, still very much revered in Japan and elsewhere. See the amazing process in the video below. The ikat used to make this jacket is slightly different, in that, rather than using a resist paste, the dashes were applied as dye to the light blue threads such that the pattern would appear once the fabric was woven.

Don't miss the secret pocket, it's hidden in the right front panel seam!

Each Japanique Jacket starts with a vintage michiyuki, which is a narrow jacket with snap closures that was meant to be worn on top of a kimono. Most vintage michiyuki won't fit larger frames, so we modified the traditional garment slightly (removed the snaps, tacked the panels back to create lapels) to create a roomier, open, flowing jacket that can fit sizes 12-18 or possibly larger. These are all one-of-a-kind jackets, so sizing will vary slightly. See video below on the various types of kimono jackets.
