Description

"Shibori Cosmos" Japanique Jacket

The marbled red and black background looks like the universe to us, with the small white shibori circles dotting the heavens like stars.

The shibori dots actually rest at the intersections of a subtle diamond grid that you can see in the silk when they catch the light just right.

Shibori is "Japanese tie-dye", where an artisan stitches along a stenciled image on the fabric, pulling the threads tightly to create a resist. The fabric is then dyed and when the threads are released, the pattern is revealed. There are dozens of shibori techniques, with the most common these days called kaneko (referring to the spots on a fawn), where an often elaborate pattern is created by hundreds of tiny dots. Kyoto is famous for this kaneko style. Watch the video below to learn more.

Don't miss the secret pocket, it's hidden in the right front panel seam!

Each Japanique Jacket starts with a vintage michiyuki, which is a narrow jacket with snap closures that was meant to be worn on top of a kimono. Most vintage michiyuki won't fit larger frames, so we modified the traditional garment slightly (removed the snaps, tacked the panels back to create lapels) to create a roomier, open, flowing jacket that can fit sizes 12-18 or possibly larger. These are all one-of-a-kind jackets, so sizing will vary slightly. See video below on the various types of kimono jackets.
