"The Amused Type" Ukiyo-e Woodblock Print

At Kyoto Kimono, our focus is on textiles, but when we were offered this collection of wood block prints, we couldn’t say no. We may never get more, but for now we are offering this collection to you.

This print is a reproduction of an Eisen (1790 - 1848) original from centuries ago, but it was still made using newly cut woodblocks in the same tradition of the original artist.

The full title of the piece is "The Amused Type: Sumida River" from the series :Twelve Views of Modern Women". The subject is playing a hand game called ken and she smiles as she gestures with both hands. There's a shamisen pick tucked into her obi, and an inset at upper left shows boats along the Sumida River.

Matted with plain white paper - could/should be re-matted and framed.

Ukiyo-e – Japanese woodblock prints – have a long tradition of portraying everyday life in Japan as well as mythology and portraits of beauty. Watch the video below to see how a contemporary artist continues the tradition.
