"Year of the Horse" Man's Haori

This is a vintage Japanese man's kimono jacket, called a haori, and would have been worn for the most formal occasions. The outer jacket is always a plain weave or solid color except for the family crests, but the linings offer a glimpse into the interests, hobbies, or dreams of its original owner. These jackets were usually commissioned by a design house and custom made.

This lining features a large galloping horse with a saddle tied like an obi and a blue mane! Look closely to see that two design techniques were used to create the horse. The large color blocks were probably made with a katagami stencil, but small shibori circles outline each color block!

The outer jacket is a solid brown with no crests. There is one small blemish on the outer back - see photo.

We display these men's haori inside out to reveal the lining - normally hidden from public view when worn, and only visible if glimpsed as it was taken off or hung up.

All of the stitching is hidden, so these jackets can normally be displayed or worn (in the West, at least) either way.
