"Castle Photo" Man's Haori

This is a vintage Japanese man's kimono jacket, called a haori, and would have been worn for the most formal occasions. The outer jacket is always a plain weave or solid color except for the family crests, but the linings offer a glimpse into the interests, hobbies, or dreams of its original owner. These jackets were usually commissioned by a design house and custom made.

This haori lining features a beautiful marbled green background to three scenes of old Japan. Two scene combine on the right to depict Mt. Fuji and a rural scene, while the other looks to be a photo transfer in gold of a Japanese castle.

The designer (or owner?) kanji signature appears on the outer front, confirming that this was an artistic piece of some value.

The outer jacket is a solid black silk with five "nine star" family crests.

We display these men's haori inside out to reveal the lining - normally hidden from public view when worn, and only visible if glimpsed as it was taken off or hung up.

All of the stitching is hidden, so these jackets can normally be displayed or worn (in the West, at least) either way.
